Terrorism

This is actually my second post with this title.

During this Week-End I have read Spook Country by William Gibson and one of the characters says something about terrorism which is so true but people tend to forget:

Are you really so scared of terrorists that you'll dismantle the structures that made America what it is?
[...]
If you are, you let the terrorist win. Because that is exactly, specifically, his goal, his only goal: to frighten you into surrending the rule of law. That's why they call him 'terrorist'. He uses terrifying threats to induce you to degrade your own society.

Today's TSUKKOMI(Total: 1) [Add a TSUKKOMI]

That's just not true though.

It's not the terrorist, but opportunistic politicians that will use any frightening event (disease, natural disaster, mass unemployment, immigration, war, terrorism) to control the masses.

The terrorists are just patsies in this process, and the same people who make the most noise about them also happen to be the ones who benefit most from their terrorist activities.

This Onion story is a bit harsh but captures it well:

http://www.theonion.com/content/news/cheney_waits_until_last_minute

Sadly, "don't let the terrorists win ..." is the same tactic, no matter how you finish the sentence, and while I agree with Gibson's goal, he's still basically trying to motivate people via terrorism, even if indirectly.
